Samsung's radical folding phone just got even closer to coming to fruition.

The Korean tech giant is working on a device, codenamed 'Winner,' where the screen can be folded in half like a wallet, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources familiar with the situation.

It's expected to have a 7-inch display that, when folded, features a camera on the back and a small display bar on the front.

A Wall Street Journal report claims that Samsung may release a folding phone in 2019. Pictured is a screenshot from a conceptual video showing what the device may look like

'Winner' would be similar to a tablet in that after it's folded open, the device would be almost all screen, without the disruption of hinges or bezels, like other folding phone models already on the market, the Journal said.

These new details closely mirror the concepts shown in patents filed by Samsung for a bendable phone.

Samsung has long discussed the idea of releasing a folding phone, confirming to investors on a recent earnings call that the device was in the process of being developed.

Many believe that Samsung could be timing the release of the 'Winner' device around Mobile World Congress in 2019.

Should Samsung decide to release the folding phone, it would be the firm's third flagship smartphone, alongside the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note models.

The folding phone could also cost an eye-watering $1,500, but it would be targeted toward niche consumers like gamers.

When not in use, the secondary display can be turned into a touchpad, which could see it turned into a gaming console rather like Nintendo's DS range

To accommodate for the device's massive screen, Samsung would have to build an even bigger battery, which has raised concerns among some at the company, the Journal explained.

In 2017, Samsung grappled with a major battery flaw in its Galaxy Note 7 phones that caused them to overheat and in some cases catch fire, forcing the firm to ultimately recall the device.

A folding phone would also require more advanced components, leading to a more expensive device for consumers, according to the Journal.

Previous reports have indicated that the official name of the device will be the Galaxy X.

Samsung is believed to have showed off a folding phone prototype to major US and European mobile carriers in private meetings at CES earlier this year.

Late last year, patent drawings revealed more details of what could be Samsung's first foldable phone.

Similar to the Journal report, the sides of the device can be folded inwards or outwards, to transform into a tablet.

The patent that was published in the WIPO database was requested by Samsung Electronics on April 24, 2017.

Samsung wouldn't be the first smartphone maker to take a leap into folding phones.

ZTE recently released its Axon M smartphone which features two 5.2-inch displays, which can be used to show separate apps, or work together as a larger tablet display.

LG has also filed several patents describing a 'mobile phone with a flexible display which can be folded in half.'

The phone appears to have two camera lenses on the back panel and, when folded, the front of the device can display information on the front screen, such as the date and the time.
