Microsoft goes virtual with raft of new 'mixed reality' Windows VR headsets

  • Claims new version of Windows 10 is 'first spatial operating system'
  • Samsung unveiled $500 Odyssey headset at Microsoft's event
  • PC makers Dell, HP, Acer and Lenovo also headsets to work with Windows 10

Microsoft is touting virtual reality headsets made by other companies in hopes of establishing personal computers running on its Windows 10 operating system as the best way for people to experience artificial worlds.

The devices unveiled Tuesday include a Samsung headset called the HMD Odyssey. The $500 headset requires a connection to a PC running on a Windows 10 update being released Oct. 17.

That's unlike Samsung's less expensive Gear VR headset, which is designed to run on smartphones powered by Google's Android operating system.

PC makers Dell, HP, Acer and Lenovo also will be making VR headsets designed to work with Windows 10 machines.

Microsoft also disclosed an acquisition of a startup called AltspaceVR to develop technology for holding business meetings in VR.

'Mixed reality on Windows PCs all begins with the upcoming release of the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update,' said Microsoft's Alex Kipman.

'It's the first spatial operating system – complete with a library of content that will inspire you, and a portfolio of the best, easiest to use and most affordable headsets paired with the most powerful motion controllers.'

Alanna Cotton, Vice President and General Manager, Samsung Electronics America, explained why the firm, which has developed the Gear VR headset with Facebook's Oculus, was also working with Microsoft.

'When we began designing and engineering the Samsung HMD Odyssey with Microsoft, there was only one goal in mind, create a high performing headset that's easy to set up and can transport people to the incredible world of virtual reality.

'Samsung is committed to working across platforms to build cutting-edge technology, and we're excited to partner with Microsoft to shape the future of virtual reality.'

WINDOWS 10 UPDATE

The 4th Windows 10 update will be offered on October 17.

It will allow hardware devices and software to tap into augmented and virtual reality.

Microsoft is looking at gaming applications first and then says business applications will follow.

Microsoft's new software release shrinks the laborious set-up of VR headsets for users to around 10 minutes, down from two to three hours now and helps cut the costs of headsets, in a step towards making such technology more mainstream.
