Research says employees should be praised at least once a quarter—and, ideally, every seven days. Are you showing enough appreciation?
A little appreciation goes a long way.O.C. Tanner has created an infographic based on its 90 years of international workplace recognition research. The graphic includes trivia like the highest number of recognitions one person received in a year (799) and the longest career in the same company (80 years). There are more substantive insights, such as the most recognized skills:

1. Teamwork

2. Hard work

3. Customer satisfaction

4. Dedication

5. Leadership

The infographic says the average employee rakes in 13 recognitions a year, though O.C. Tanner’s research advises employees should be praised “every seven days and formally recognized at least once a quarter.” That might seem excessive, but appreciation does boost morale, increase productivity and instill a culture of positive reciprocity. Pats on the back are also quite cheap.

There’s never a wrong time for recognition, though the infographic does note that Fridays are the most popular day for plaudits. December is the top month for praise, which makes sense, as holiday parties tend to turn into gush fests once the drinks start flowing.

Instead of saving kudos for Fridays, the company holiday party or Employee Appreciation Day (the first Friday in March), why not let those compliments flow throughout the year? It’s an easy way to keep employees engaged and eager to do great work.
