BEIJING (Reuters) - The cost of settling China's rural workers into city life in the government's urbanization drive could be about 650 billion yuan ($106 billion) a year, the equivalent of 5.5 percent of fiscal revenue last year, a government think-tank said on Tuesday.

The figure is based on the assumption that 25 million people a year settle in cities, with the government spending the money on making sure they enjoy the same benefits in healthcare, housing and schools that city residents have, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences(CASS) said.

China's central bank injects 17bn yuan into markets

China's central bank injected funds into the money markets on Tuesday for the first time since February, easing fears of a repeat of the panic in June when cash markets were squeezed.

The People's Bank of China pumped 17bn yuan (£1.8bn) into markets through seven-day reverse bond repurchase agreements.

The bank made the liquidity injection after allowing a credit crunch to happen in late June as a warning against risky lending practices.

It set the reverse rate to be paid at 4.4%, much higher than the last official guidance of 3.35%.

Wang Lin, a 61-year-old "healer" from China's Jiangxi province, has conjured up a considerable fortune through his career as a spiritual adviser to a host of senior politicians and A-list celebrities including billionaire Jack Ma, the actors Jackie Chan and Jet Li and even Suharto, the former Indonesian president.

He reportedly owns one Rolls-Royce, three Hummers and a luxury five-floor mansion in Jiangxi province.

But Mr Wang's supposedly supernatural talents – which he claims include curing cancer and conjuring snakes out of the blue – have done little to shield him from a sudden barrage of bad press and, now, an official investigation.
