http://www.looooker.com/?p=42468

Does Facebook want to read your thoughts? Secretive division may reveal 'mind-reading devices' in April

  • The 'Building 8' team are working on mind-reading devices, source claims
  • Zuckerberg is due to make an announcement at the developer conference
  • Earlier this year, Facebook posted jobs for a 'brain-computer interface engineer' and 'neural imaging engineer'

Mark Zuckerberg might be on the verge of unveiling plans for mind-reading brain implants, claims a report.

A 'brain-computer interface' could be revealed at a Facebook event in April which would give people the ability to communicate using only their minds.

The so-called 'Building 8' team, who are working on mind-reading devices are using Facebook's billions to create experimental technology such as cameras and augmented reality devices, claims the report.

Mark Zuckerberg is due to make an announcement about Facebook's 'Building 8' team, which is based in Menlo Park in San Francisco, at the developer conference next month.

Although we do not know quite how much of their work the company will unveil, Business Insider believes there is  'an ambitious effort to create and sell millions of consumer hardware units'.

Some of these projects include technologies that could be used to read people's minds - although currently the focus appears to be on medical applications.

Zuckerberg has previously made his ambitions to create a telepathy system very clear, calling it the 'ultimate communication technology.'

He said: 'One day, I believe we'll be able to send full rich thoughts to each other directly using technology.

'You'll just be able to think of something and your friends will immediately be able to experience it too, if you'd like.

'This would be the ultimate communication technology.'

Earlier this year, an advert posting by Building 8 suggested that the mysterious division could be working on mind-reading technology.

One advert is for a 'brain-computer interface engineer' to work on a '2-year B8 project focused on developing advanced BCI technologies.'

Details on what the job will involve are limited, but the advert adds that one of the key responsibilities will be applying 'machine learning methods, including encoding and decoding models, to neuroimaging and electrophysiological data.'

The second advert is for a 'neural imaging engineer' who will be responsible for 'a project focused on developing novel non-invasive neuroimaging technologies.'

Both jobs are based at the Menlo Park site in California.

One of the companies, which is called Cortera Neurotechnologies, was co-founded by Dr Rikky Muller in 2013.

It designs medical devices aimed at providing innovative treatments for currently incurable neurological conditions.

It is hoped the technology could one day allow people who have been paralysed to control prosthetic limbs, by recording this neural feedback and providing output to the central nervous system.

The Chan Zuckerberg Biohub wrote: 'Muller is developing new wireless microsystems that directly interface with the brain for long-term, minimally-invasive neurological recording.

'Her broad goal is to engineer novel implants that can simultaneously sense and alter physiological responses to enable drug delivery and the treatment of neuropsychiatric disorders.'

Another project funded by the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub involves working to develop 3D imaging technology which can probe the 'deep structures of the brain' and is 'essential for unravelling neural activity'.

Zuckerberg also has other divisions working on similar technology.
