SkinMarks was developed by a team of scientists at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, Germany, and in collaboration with Google.

The researches noticed how ‘the body provides many recognizable landmarks due to the underlying skeletal structure and variations in skin texture, elasticity, and color’, which led to the innovation.

‘SkinMarks are temporary interactive tattoos. They sense touch on submillimeter electrodes, capture squeeze and bend input, and support active visual output,’ researches wrote in the study.

‘Through a vastly reduced tattoo thickness and increased stretchability, a SkinMark is suffi- ciently thin and flexible to conform to irregular geometry, like flexure lines and protruding bones, while still allowing the user to reference those landmarks actually or visually.’

The tattoos are made of paper with wires and electrodes printed on top of them, reports New Scientist.

And the SkinMarks are said to be thinner than the width of a human hair.

‘To fabricate an interactive tattoo, we use commercially available temporary tattoo paper (Tattoo Decal Paper) as the substrate, as proposed in recent work,’ reads the study.

‘We screen print one or multiple layers of functional inks onto it. After printing each layer, the ink is heat cured with a heat gun (130◦C or 266◦F for 3 minutes).’

‘After adding a thin adhesive layer, the tattoo is ready to be transferred onto skin.’

Although these e-tattoos sound like something from a sci-fi film, they are applied the same way as the traditional tattoos many people used as a kid – by rubbing water over them while it is pressed on the skin.’

The tattoos’ designs are also focused on what function they will be used for and where they will be placed.

‘The user´is notified about virtual objects with an audio feedback,' noted the researchers.

'The user can attempt catching it by squeezing the tattoo.'

“You’ll have these digital tattoo parlors which you can go to in 2050 and 5 minutes later you can walk out with the iPhone 22 on your forearm,’ he said.
