AT&T and General Electric have teamed up to up to help accelerate the digital era of urban development.
The firms have unveiled plans to add cameras, microphones and sensors to more than 3,000 street lights in San Diego, making the first large-scale use of 'Smart City' tools.
The system will allow street lights to monitor traffic, crowd sizes, weather and even notify authorities of gunshots in the area.
'We are thrilled to expand Current's relationship with AT&T to help cities redefine the civic engagement model—our digital network is based on an open platform, which allows entrepreneurs, incubators and students to get involved in the future development smart city applications,' said John Gordon, Chief Digital Officer of Current, powered by General Electric (GE).
'AT&T has a long history of working commercially with municipalities, and our technology will be a perfect fit toward helping more cities unleash the limitless potential of the Industrial Internet.'
AT&T revealed the Smart Cities framework in January 2016, which uses the Internet of Things to create solutions for cities and helps form alliances with technology leaders and industry organizations.
The communications company has already committed to testing framework in numerous spotlight cities and universities, which includes Atlanta, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Chicago, Dallas, Georgia Institute of Technology, Miami-Dade County and Montgomery County, Maryland.
Smart cities are urban areas built on 'Smart' and 'Intelligent' solutions and technology that will lead to the adoption of at least 5 of the 8 following smart parameters—smart energy, smart building, smart mobility, smart healthcare, smart infrastructure, smart technology, smart governance and smart education, smart citizen.
'More than half of the world's population lives in an urban area,' said Mike Zeto, general manager and executive director, AT&T Smart Cities.
'As an Internet of Things and smart cities leader, we see the impact technology has on helping cities address the issues facing their communities—and their citizens.'
'Collaborating with the cities and our strategic alliances puts us closer to making smart cities a reality.'
The firms plan to add sensing nodes on top of the light poles to create the futuristic system, which will be programmed to locate gunshots, estimate crowd sizes, check vehicle speeds and more.
And the data will be provided to entrepreneurs and students to develop even more useful applications.
However, GE has explained that the data is anonymous and does not contain any personal identifiers.
GE will also include a $30 million LED lighting upgrade to 14,000 of San Diego's street lights, which is expected to save the city $2.4 million a year.
'This is a brand new market,' Maryrose Sylvester, chief executive officer of GE Current, said in an interview.
A 2014 estimate by Frost & Sullivan predicted the market for cities could be valued at $1.5 trillion by 2020, she said.
'San Diego is a very early adopter. While it's a smallish deal in dollars it's the biggest deal of this kind yet.'
AT&T will act as the data carrier and provide highly secure connectivity for the San Diego deployment, which is expected to save the city approximately $2.4 million in annual energy costs.
'Innovation is at the core of who we are—and what we do,' said Mike Zeto, general manager, AT&T Smart Cities.
'AT&T and GE are the companies that modernized the telephone and light bulb.'
'Together, we will usher in a new digital frontier, giving cities and citizens alike the benefits of a connected city.'
