Green living reaches new heights: 'Vertical forest' towers containing a hotel and offices to be built in China to help tackle greenhouse gas emissions

  • They will have enough greenery to absorb 25 tons of CO2 each year and produce 60kg of oxygen
  • Around 1,100 trees and 2,500 cascading plants and shrubs will cover a 65,000sq-ft area on the buildings
  • The towers - the first of their sort in Asia - are being built in Nanjing and are due to be completed in 2018

China is taking green living to new heights, with the construction of two ‘vertical forest’ towers.

They will be built in Nanjing and contain hundreds of trees, plants and shrubs along the facades that will help tackle increasing carbon dioxide levels.

Six hundred tall trees, 500 medium-sized trees and 2,500 cascading plants and shrubs will cover a 65,000-square-foot area on the buildings, called Nanjing Green Towers.

The taller tower, 600 feet high, crowned on the top by a green lantern, will host offices - from the 8th floor to the 35th – and it will include a museum, a green architecture school and a private club on the rooftop. The second tower, 355 feet high, will provide a Hyatt hotel with 247 rooms and a swimming pool on the rooftop

A 60ft-high podium will host commercial, recreational and educational functions, including multi-brand shops, a food market, restaurants, conference hall and exhibition spaces.

The Nanjing towers, due to be completed in 2018, will be the first vertical forests in Asia and are being designed by Stefano Boeri Architects (SBA), which is also behind similar ground-breaking forest skyscrapers in Milan, Italy, and Lausanne, Switzerland.

The towering structure will be covered with trees to clean the air and to ensure guests feel like they are bedding down in the wild.

Describing vertical foresting as the eco-conscious future of architecture, SBA reports on its website: 'Every day architects all around the world rethink and reinterpret the idea of the trees in the sky.

'Each of these attempts is extremely important for the future of architecture and the future of our planet, because the single thought can have certain impact, but thousands of thoughts can change the world.'
