‘Flying water taxis’ that surf 2ft above rivers could soon transport commuters in Paris and San Francisco

Futuristic 'flying' taxis could soon be ferrying passengers along the Seine in Paris and the San Francisco Bay, after its inventors were given new funding.

The pair behind the venture say they are set to secure a third round of funding after raising 3.45 million euros (£2.99 million/$3.6 million) last month.

Production of the taxis, named the Sea Bubble, will start next month and tests of the vessels will be carried out in the French capital in spring.

Yachtsman Alain Thébault, who invented the solar-powered shuttles along with Swedish windsurfer Anders Bringdal, said the unusual vehicles will be able to float two feet above the water, and reach speeds of 18mph (30km per hour).

SeaBubbles is now expecting around 10 times that amount in the next round of funding, Thébault told Bloomberg.

Tests of the vessels, which can carry six people at a time, take place in the French capital in spring.

Paris was selected for the tests because Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo supported the project when it got underway, Thébault said.

He told The Telegraph that he hopes Sea Bubbles will be ordered on apps like Uber.

SeaBubbles uses technology invented by Thébault for his experimental sail-powered vessel called Hydroptere that first set sail in 1994.

The technology from the Hydroptere means when SeaBubbles transport passengers across the water, the vehicles will not float on the surface like a boat.

The Hydroptere uses the same mechanism that allows planes to fly, with air passing over the wings generating lift.

Instead it rises above the water, reducing the amount of drag on the water by up to 40 per cent compared to normal boats.

The inventor said: 'Once we have gone beyond the prototype and have fully developed the Sea Bubble, we might, after Paris, begin with London or Geneva.'

The propulsion system is driven by electricity, making it zero emission and each taxi is silent and has a range of 50 to 60 miles (80-100 km ).

The SeaBubbles generate no waves, so can operate in no-wake zones.

He said that officials from London had not been in touch about hosting tests of the new technology in Britain.

Journeys will cost less than £10 ($12), and Thébault said he one day hopes the futuristic fibreglass and high-density pods will be driverless.

And explaining the project to The Local, he said: 'The idea actually came from my daughters after I sailed from LA to Hawaii recently.

'They told me to invent a zero-emission cab because they were sick of seeing the pollution in Paris, London, and in the US.'

He said: 'Next spring we will hold a public demonstration on the Seine in front of the National Assembly (Parliament) in Paris with five Sea Bubbles.'

The design includes wing-like arms under the futuristic boats, which will lift them from the water.
