Bosch demonstrates industrial robot with smart SKIN that could allow humans to work more closely with machines

A new manufacturing robot equipped with smart ‘skin’ could allow humans to work alongside industrial machines with no barrier in between.

Bosch demonstrated how its robotic arm, fitted with the electronic sensor skin, can sense when a human enters the ‘danger zone’ and stop moving before an accident occurs.

The technology, revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, could even be incorporated into everyday robotics systems to make them far safer.

‘This is how a robot can interact with the human out of a cage,’ exhibitor Franz Schmidt told Dailymail.com.

‘Normally, it can only act in a cage, so as to not hurt a human.

'And in this case, with the skin, you can see when I come close to the robot he stops moving so he is not touching me.

‘You can see when I move out of the danger zone he restarts immediately again.’

With the skin, the machine can be what’s known as a ‘collaborative robot.’

The robot works autonomously, and can pick up objects and place them in the correct places while the human works nearby, handling more complicated tasks.

According to Schmidt, the sensor skin has a ‘capacitive electronical field,’ that can detect if a person that gets too close.

The technology could even be scaled up to work on a larger system.

Or, it could be used outside of industrial automation as well, the exhibitor explained.

One such use is in the coffee bot, also demonstrated at CES, making for the ‘robot supported barista.’

The robotic arm on display works completely autonomously once it’s learned what its job will be.

‘For the first use, you must train him so that he knows what to do, and then he saves the work item list and then he can do it completely by himself,’ Schmidt said.
