Called GeniCan, this gadget sits on the side of a recycle bin or garbage can and scans the barcodes of empty packages as users throw them away.

Each item is then added to a digital grocery list and order automatically from your Amazon account using the Dash Replenish program.

GeniCan is designed with an accompanied app that lets users tap into their list at any time and it will text you when the garbage is full.

The smart devices is powered by Duracell batteries, a product of the Amazon Dash Replenishment program, which the firm says will keep the gadget powered up to a year.

GeniCan is available in three colors – red, black and white – and can be purchased online for $124.99.

Amazon launched Dash Replenish in August, which links to smart appliances so they automatically order household items such as dishwashing tablets or laundry detergent.

Designed to work as part of the so-called 'Internet of Things', they can be controlled using smart phone apps and over the internet. Other devices added to the service such as Honeywell, which calculate when a new air filter is needed.

In addition to WePlenish, which learns coffee drinkers' consumption patterns, andautomatically reorders fresh coffee, and Nestle's BabyNes System that users replenish their baby's formula.

'More and more customers are experiencing the magic of automatic reordering with Dash Replenishment,' said Daniel Rausch, Director of Amazon Dash.

They avoid the hassle of tracking their household stock of essentials like dishwasher detergent, printer ink, and water filters—when they're about to run out, Amazon automatically delivers a package to their doorstep.'

'We're delighted by the momentum of the program and the feedback we're hearing from device makers and developers—Dash Replenishment is simple to integrate and brings an innovative new customer benefit and business model to their connected devices.'
