Charge your phone for five hours in FIVE MINUTES: Qualcomm system can power up batteries in record time

By ABIGAIL BEALL

A new phone charger could mean you never run out of battery again.

The Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0, which has been released today, will fill your phone with enough power for five hours of battery life after just five minutes of charging.

The technology is designed to be more efficient by wasting less energy than previous versions, which means the phone would not heat up as much while it charges.

The technology will be available with the next generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, San Diego-headquartered Qualcomm announced today.

'It’s not just faster, it’s designed to be more efficient and run cooler than prior generations,' Qualcomm said in a blog post.

'Compared to Quick Charge 3.0, Quick Charge 4 is up-to 20 per cent faster, or 30 per cent more efficient, while charging up to 5° C cooler.'

Devices compatible with Qualcomm's previous version, Quick Charge 3, are any phone with a Snapdragon 820 processor, including the LGE V20, ZTE Axon and HTC 10.

'Quick Charge 4 is engineered to charge a typical smartphone from zero to 50 per cent in about 15 minutes or less.'

Live Quick Charge 3, the new technology is also designed to be responsive to the phone battery - meaning it will work harder when the phone has no power left and it will stop charging when the battery is full.

The secret behind this is an algorithm called the Intelligent Negotiation for Optimum Voltage (INOV).

It figures out what power level to request when charging, to deliver the maximum amount of power transfer without harming the electronics.

But phones featuring Qualcomm's  Snapdragon 835 processor will benefit from the 'five for five' feature.

As our phones are equipped to perform more and more processes, battery life is becoming an increasingly important aspect when buying a new handset.

A study earlier this year by marketing research firm Sino-MR found fast charging influences 60 per cent of users when buying their next phone.

'A similar global study by Qualcomm Technologies confirmed this number, and also found that over 25 per cent of consumers think it takes too long to charge up today,' Qualcomm said.

Quick Charge 4 is expected to be commercially available in the first half of 2017.
