An autonomous race car called 'DevBot #1', has made its debut on a street track at the Formula E Marrakech ePrix.

The battery-powered prototype is being tested ahead of Roborace – a proposed race series where autonomous vehicles will compete on circuits in cities around the world.

The car completed a successful 30-minute test in the Moroccan city, which its creators describe as 'the most exciting space in the world right now.'

Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag, told MailOnline he expects the radical racing cars to soon rival the fastest traditional engines in the world - and even outpace a Formula 1 car.

'We think the time is right - the technology is starting to be ready, and the environment is there,' he said.

Speaking to CNN, Justin Cooke from Roborace, said: 'It's the first time we've run the Devbot in driverless mode on a Formula E track in the middle of a city street.'

'It's so exciting for the team who put hours and hours of work in.

'These guys were up to 1-2 am in the morning developing a technology that no one else in the world is able to do at this speed and in these complicated environments.'

The DevBot #1 uses a variety of sensors, including GPS, radar and ultrasonics to learn how to navigate a track at speed, while avoiding obstacles in its path.

Mr Cooke said: 'What we are doing is at the forefront of technology right now.

'There are two or three kinds of space races, if you will - some people are going to Mars, we're developing robotic cars and I think it's probably one of the most, if not the most exciting space in the world right now.'

The next test will involve racing two cars together on the track, with the eventual aim of having up to 10 cars competing at once.

In March, Roborace revealed designs for cars to compete in the series.

Daniel Simon, Chief Design Officer of Roborace, who designed the cars, said: 'My goal was to create a vehicle that takes full advantage of the unusual opportunities of having no driver without ever compromising on beauty.

Ten teams, each with two driverless cars, will compete in one-hour races over the full championship season.

All the teams will have the same cars, but will create their own real-time computing algorithms and AI technologies.

'The Roborace is as much about competition as it is entertainment,' said Mr Simon.

Therefore – and quite unusual in today's racing world – beauty was very high on our agenda and we work hard to merge the best performance with stunning styling.

'It was important to us that we generate substantial downforce without unnecessary parts cluttering the car to maintain a clean and iconic look.

'This is largely made possible by using the floor as the main aerodynamic device and we are currently developing active body parts that are more organic and seamless than solutions today.'

Formula E has worked with Kinetik to develop the series.

Formula E has already pioneered the use of VR cameras, giving motor racing fans the opportunity to virtually sit behind the wheel of a radical new racing car during races.

The Formula E series uses electric cars, each fitted with a 360 degree camera to allow viewers to experience the race from the driver's point of view.
