It might seem like an idea from an alternative clothing brand, but projecting images onto moving clothing is a difficult task.
Until recently, scientists had only been able to project onto still surfaces, or those that were going to move predictably.
Now a group in Japan has demonstrated the ability to do 'dynamic projection mapping', or projecting onto an unpredictably moving object, using flashing lights and cotton t-shirts.
Scientists in Tokyo have developed a way to project images onto objects that are moving unpredictably, using a combination of two types of technology.
The researchers, form the Ishikawa Watanabe Laboratory, showed off their technology in a YouTube video.
'The first technology is a high-speed projector 'DynaFlash' that can project 8-bit images up to 1,000 fps with 3 ms delay,' the researchers wrote.
'The second technology is a high-speed non-rigid surface tracking at 1,000 fps.'
This sensing technology is called the 'Deformable Dot Cluster Marker'.
This works by projecting at a rate faster than the human brain can perceive any misalignment between the deformed target and the projected pictures, they said.
The team said it was 'focusing on new paradigms in the field of user interface and fashion' by mapping onto a deformed sheet of paper and T-shirt.
'Also we show that projection to multiple targets can be controlled flexibly by using our recognition technique.'
The researchers used infra-red ink to draw on the t-shirts, to demonstrate the technology.
This 'allow[s] the marker to be invisible to human and enable robust sensing independently of the projected images' the team said.
'In particular, as a challenging target for the dynamic projection mapping, we focus on a non-rigid surface' they added.
Users on Reddit were discussing the applications of the new technology.
'Maybe they will start printing unique, infrared reflecting patterns on each piece of clothing,' said one user. 'So they can target projected ads specifically to you and your friends!'
Another said: 'I'm sure this will be used in applications other than annoying video adverts.'
