$22m X Prize to make Avatar a reality: Contest to create machines that can 'allow people's consciousness to be transported instantaneously'

Humanoid robots could soon allow us to stream our consciousness anywhere in the world, acting as surrogate bodies that enable people to ‘instantly be in multiple places at once.’
This is the goal of the Avatar XPrize, an ANA-sponsored concept for a $22 million contest just selected at the XPrize Visioneers 2016 Summit as ‘ready to launch.’
The technology would make James Cameron's Avatar a reality, developing ‘limitless travel’ avatars that can be rented and controlled remotely by a human operator, who will be able to hear, see, and feel what the robot is experiencing.
Backed by Japan’s largest airline, ANA, the Avatar XPrize will be a globally televised competition for the development of real avatars.
Teams will be given three years to create a system that can control an avatar in one basic task.
Then in 2022, finalists will move on to the Annual Avatar Games to compete across five categories: caretaker, public speaker, disaster relief, tennis, and musician.
These tasks will include pushing a wheelchair through a course, cooking an omelette, and even providing basic healthcare to a wounded person.
According to the creators, this prize will ultimately lead to the creation of ‘an Avatar Platform that will turn these humanoid robots into shared assets, allowing humans to rent them, substituting the native AI control with their own.’
The team, led by American scientist Dr. Harry Kloor, says that the use of avatars can help to remove the barriers in solving many of the world’s problems by allowing humans to be where they are needed instantly.
While the resources are abundant to tackle global challenges, they explain, physical distance acts as a major limitation.
But with avatars, humans would be able to teleport their consciousness to perform any function remotely.
‘Humans, through an Avatar Platform, will be able to literally hear, see, talk, touch, feel, and move through the robotic body as if that robotic body were their own,’ the creators write.
‘You will feel a real presence as if your consciousness has actually moved into the robot. Anything you can do with your own body, you can do with a robotic body – and more.’
Teams participating in the Avatar XPrize will qualify in 2020, and partake in annual competitions for a $15 million prize.
It’s hoped that this will provide incentive to develop the platform that could one day enable the control of humanoid robots as ‘shared assets’ for use around the world.
According to the creators, the games will continue every year until the prize is won – and each year, a team will be awarded an ‘Epic Attempt but Failure Prize.’
Ultimately, the Avatar XPrize aims to facilitate the creation of ‘avatars that you – the public will be able to use to travel anywhere, anytime, instantly.’
