Watch out Alexa, Siri may be your next competition: Apple's own Echo-like smart home device has hit the testing stage, report claims

By STACY LIBERATORE

Alexa may soon have some new competition.

Apple is reportedly developing its own device similar to the Amazon Echo, which is said to have left the research and development lab and is now being tested as a prototype.

Similar to the Echo, this Siri-driven device will control appliances, locks, lights and other areas of the home via voice activation.

Apple’s new voice activated device has been kept under wraps for about two years.

Although it is not clear if the rumors are true, if it does hit the market ‘it would be Apple’s most significant piece of new hardware’ since debuting the Apple Watch in 2014, reports Mark Gurman with Bloomberg who first reported on the issue.

DailyMail.com has contacted Apple regarding the claims, but the firm declined to comment.

Although this technology would put the iPhone maker in the same game as Amazon and Google, who is developing Google Home, Apple envisions it a little different - it would augment its smartphones.

Apple is attempting to differentiate itself from the other firms with more advanced microphone and speaker technology, two people familiar with the matter said.

And some of the technology in the prototype includes facial recognition sensors, another said.

This news coincides with Apple’s purchase of the facial recognition startups Faceshift and Emotient over the past two years.

These firms appear to play key roles in creating a device that adapts to a room or a person’s emotional state.

Users would also have the ability to use the same Siri features with the device that they enjoy with their iPhone.

Apple has also considered integrating mapping information into the speaker, another person said, which could notify users when it is time to leave their house for an appointment.

News about a ‘Siri speaker’ was first brought to light in May by Amir Efrati of The Information who wrote, 'Apple is upping its game in the field of intelligent assistants’.

'After years of internal debate and discussion about how to do so, the company is preparing to open up Siri to apps made by others.

'And it is working on an Amazon Echo-like device with a speaker and microphone that people can use to turn on music, get news headlines or set a timer.'

Apple showed its interested in the smart-home space with the launch of HomeKit in 2014, which lets third-party smart-home accessory makers integrate with Siri.

This was also the same year Apple began its work with the Siri-powered speakers.

However, Apple isn’t the second competitor in this game – earlier this year, Google revealed a new smart assistant it plans to put in everything from a wireless speaker to messaging apps.

Called Google Home, the small speaker will be able to play music and access Google Assistant.

It will harness the power of Google's search engine along with the AI technology the firm developed to beat a grandmaster at the ancient board game Go, to create assistants people can talk and text with as if they were a human being.

Google boss Sundar Pichai took to the stage at a giant outdoor amphitheatre holding 7,000 next to Google's Silicon Valley HQ to unveil the Google Assistant and Google Home speaker, alongside a new version of Android and a virtual reality headsets for mobile phones.

The firm is aiming squarely at Amazon's Echo with the home speaker, which has Amazon's Alexa assistant built in.
