Every students dream come true: Alphabet and Chipotle to test 'Project Wing' drone delivery of burritos at Virginia Tech

It's every college student's dream – airborne drones that deliver burritos to campus.
Alphabet's Project Wing and Chipotle have teamed up for a pilot program that flies these stuffed tortillas to the students at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia.
The hybrid drones will fly to the delivery location from a Chipotle food truck, hover over the customer and lower the order down using a wire cable.
The experimental service begins this month and will last for just a few weeks.
And this program also marks the first time Project Wing has used its technology to deliver items directly to consumers.
'It's the first time that we're actually out there delivering stuff to people who want that stuff,' Dave Vos, who heads Project Wing, told Alan Levin with Bloomberg.
Alphabet first unveiled its secrete two-year drone delivery project in 2014.
And the drones were initially developed by X, the semi-secret research and development facility founded by Alphabet - Google's parent company.
For the new experiment at Virginia Tech, the unmanned aerial vehicles will travel back and forth to a Chipotle food truck instead of an established restaurant.
This will let researchers observe the accuracy of the technology's navigation system and more importantly, see how people respond.
Although the main objective is to test the drone and its technology, researchers are also interested in how well the packaging protects the burritos and keeps them warm.
The delivery drones will fly autonomously to drop off and pick up orders and a human operated will be present to take control if necessary, as per FAA rules, Vos explained.
Also, regulations state that drones are not permitted to fly over people, so the students ordering their burritos will be shielded, according to the company.
The data gathered from this burrito-bearing aircraft experiment will also be given to the FAA to help the agency develop new riles for drone delivery, Vos said.

The FAA has been very strict with drone delivery in the US, which has ultimately slowed down the process for this industry.
However, The White House gave Alphabet the greenlight to start testing its drones at a US site last month.
This initiative is part of The White House's project to understand this technology and what safety measures need to be implemented before unleashing flocks into the open skies.
While the Department of Interior plans to expand its use of drone flights, according to an e-mail Bloomberg received from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
This move is a result of the Federal Aviation Administration signing off on the first set of drone regulations that will let individuals obtain unmanned pilot licenses for commercial flights.
'Data gathered will be shared with government partners to help regulators answer critical safety and human factors questions for UAV cargo delivery operations,' reads the statement from The White House.
