We've all been there – just when you need your phone the most, its battery dies.

But the days of making sure you pack a charger could soon be a thing of the past.

A company has designed a new rechargeable battery that offers double the energy capacity of standard batteries on the market.

SolidEnergy Systems has developed the battery with several new materials that make it twice as energy-efficient, yet just as safe as standard batteries.

Qichao Hu, CEO of SolildEnergy, told MIT News: 'It is kind of the holy grail for batteries.

'With two-times the energy density, we can make a battery half the size, but that still lasts the same amount of time, as a lithium ion battery.

'Or we can make a battery the same size as a lithium ion battery, but now it will last twice as long.'

Typical lithium-ion batteries move ions from a negatively-charged graphite cathode, to a positively-charged anode through an electrolyte catalyst.

This sends electrons that were attached to the ions through a circuit which then powers the device.

Until now, graphite has been used for the cathode, however this has a limited capacity of ions.

The battery swaps out the graphite for a very thin, high-energy lithium-metal foil.

The foil can hold more ions than graphite, increasing the battery's energy capacity.

Chemical modifications to the electrolyte catalyst also make the typically short-lived lithium metal batteries rechargeable and safer to use.

In the initial testing of the SolidEnergy battery in October 2015, the researchers showed that at half the size of the lithium battery used in an iPhone 6, the new battery offered 2.0 amp hours of power, compared with the iPhone's battery of 1.8 amp hours.

Researchers have been trying to make rechargeable lithium metal batteries for decades, but to no avail.

Mr Hu said: 'It is kind of the holy grail for batteries.'

The company hopes to bring the batteries to smartphones and wearables in early 2017, and to electric cars by 2018.

But the first use in November this year, will be in drones.

Mr Hu said: 'Several customers are using drones and balloons to provide free Internet to the developing world, and to survey for disaster relief.

'It's a very exciting and noble application.'

Mr Hu added that using the batteries in electric vehicles could represent a 'huge societal impact.'

He said: 'Industry standard is that electric vehicles need to go at least 200 miles on a single charge.

'We can make the battery half the size and half the weight, and it will travel the same distance, or we can make it the same size and same weight, and now it will go 400 miles on a single charge.'
