Is Apple working on a TANK? Patent reveals plans for a bizarre bendy vehicle with giant treads

A slew of patent applications granted in the US have revealed Apple may be planning a fleet of vehicles.

Sketches filed with the patent show plans for an articulated vehicle, with two sections joined in the middle, running on tracks.

Initial impressions point to something resembling a cross between a bendy bus and a tank.

The patent application, granted earlier this week to Apple Inc and defence firm BAE Systems, shows plans for a steering device for two parts of a vehicle.

It remains unclear as to what the final vehicle could look like, but one of BAE’s existing vehicles, the BvS10 uses a similar design.

The BvS10 has an articulated two-part vehicle which moves on tracks.

On its website, in a description under footage of the vehicle in action, the firm describes it as a ‘proven workhorse’.

It adds: ‘The family of BvS10 variants are all capable of rapidly traversing terrain that would hinder other all-terrain vehicles.’

Commenting on the patent design, website Patently Apple said it is proof that Apple has an automotive division which could use such a design.

But despite the military connection, it won’t necessarily mean cities around the world are likely to see fleets of tanks emblazoned with the Apple logo roaring down their streets any time soon.

Instead, the patented technology could provide a single element for a larger automotive project, such as automated vehicles.

Previous patent applications have hinted at plans for an iCar, with novel charging technologies, as well as using an iPhone as a key to unlock a vehicle.

As with all Apple patents, it is unclear at this early stage where the development might be at, or if it the technology will make it to a final working product.
