Your next refrigerator could harness magnetic cooling to be significantly quieter and reduce your environmental footprint.

Cooltech Applications has just launched the first commercially available magnetic refrigeration system, and it claims to solve both environmental and economic challenges of the electricity-guzzling appliances.

The firm says this system will work without the use of any refrigerant gas, and can be used in everything from a medical refrigerator or a display case to a wine cellar.

 

Cooltech's system uses the magnetocaloric effect, which describes the phenomenon in which a material heats up when placed in a magnetic field, and cools down when removed from it.

According to the firm, this is 'reversible and almost instantaneous.'

The Magnetic Refrigeration System (MRS) uses a controlled a magnetic field to apply repeated magnetization-demagnetization cycles to a suitable material.

Then, glycol water is used as a coolant fluid to transfer heat between cold and hot sources.

Refrigerators are constantly drawing electricity, and account for about 17 percent of global electricity consumption, the firm explains.

 

As magnets do not require an energy source, the new system would be far more efficient.

It also operates without the use of refrigerant gas, and the firm says this could help to reduce the high emissions from global refrigeration and air conditioning.

By 2020, Cooltech explains that cooling systems will account for roughly 13 percent of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.

 

But, they say 'Magnetic Cooling will contribute to reduce this figure by producing cold energy without any polluting gas.'

The MRS can generate 400W of refrigeration power, and keep the internal temperature between 35.6 and 41° F (2-5°C).

Due to the nature of its design, Cooltech says the MRS will require minimal maintenance, making for lower operational costs for the user, and it won't run the risk of hazardous leaks.

The magnetic cooling system will run on a 'low noise level,' at less than 35 decibels with minimized vibrations.

Though there will be some magnetic emissions from the technology, the firm says these will be 'far lower than the ones from a little promotional fridge magnet.'
