Selfie addicts rejoice: Google Photos hints at unlimited free storage for Nexus users

  • Discovery was made in a teardown of Google Photos' next update
  • Currently, Google Photos limits free service to 16 megapixels for images
  • Suggests Nexus is working on higher megapixel cameras in future models

Nexus may have answered the prayers of selfie addicts everywhere.

Owners of a Nexus device could soon have unlimited storage of high-quality images and 4K video storage in Google Photos.

This is according to an Android Police teardown of the Android application package (APK) for Google Photos' next update.

Currently, Google Photos limits its free service to a maximum of 16 megapixels for images and 1080p for videos.

Anything larger, and they will be automatically downsized.

Users can also opt for Google’s paid storage plans if they exceed the 15GB of free storage offered.

This costs £6.80 ($9.99) per month for 1TB.

Text buried in the code of the latest update reads: 'With Nexus, back up all you want! Unlimited free storage for original quality photos & videos upload from your Nexus device.'

The best Nexus camera shoots 12.3MP so the change indicates Nexus is working on a higher megapixel cameras in the future.

The new update will be more immediately useful for video as the Nexus 6P and 5X can shoot at 4K UHD 3,840×2,160-pixel resolution.

In November, Google Photos released a 'Free up Space' feature will automatically delete photos stored on the mobile device that have already been sent to the cloud.

It will even allow users to easily see their pictures and video at any time - assuming they're online.

'Running out of space on your phone is the worst,' Google said.

'You're stuck constantly deleting apps, music, and pictures, just to make room for one more photo or video.

To use the service, Android users on the 'Setting' screen, just tap the option to begin the deleting process.

To make sure that there are no accidental taps, the app will ask you to confirm each deletion before the photo disappears.

All of the deleted photos will remain in the cloud in case you want to download them in the future.

Android owners will also be able to get rid of any photos they have stored on their device's SD card from inside the app, so they don't have to see them displayed there any more.

On the web, there are choices in the quality of the photos.

Google Photos can also keep track of your phone's storage space for you.

'Get notified when your phone is running low on space, and easily remove the device copies of backed up photos older than 30 days right from the Assistant,' the firm said.

'All your photos and videos will still be accessible when you're connected, both in the app and on the web.'

If all your photos were uploaded in 'Original quality', you will also be able to change them to 'High quality' to save space.

High-quality files don't count against your Google storage quota.
