The simple trick that can boost battery life by 50%: Switching your web browser could help save power on your laptop

  • Opera has introduced a new power-save mode into its new laptop browser
  • It detects if power cable is detached, offering to turn on the power saving
  • A laptop using the feature lasted three hours longer than with Chrome

Opera's new browser for laptops has a power saving mode (pictured) that it claims can cut the battery drain by up to 50 per cent compared to earlier versions of the software and competitors like Google Chrome

Most laptop users will have faced the heart-rate raising moment of racing to get their work done before the power in their battery runs out.

But now a simple trick could help to extend laptop battery life by up to 50 per cent – by switching the browser you use to browse the internet.

Developers behind Opera, the web browser, say they have introduced a new power-saving mode to the software.

It claims the new mode can reduce the battery drain on laptops by up to 50 per cent compared to earlier versions of the browser and Google Chrome.
Opera (pictured for desktop and mobile) accounts for less than two per cent of the web browser traffic on the internet, far behind giants Google Chrome and Microsoft Internet Explorer

Opera currently accounts for less than two per cent of the browser traffic used to access the internet, far behind Microsoft Internet Explorer and Chrome.

But in a developer version of its latest browser, Opera 39, Norwegian firm Opera Software has incorporated an option to extend laptop battery use.

The feature becomes activated when the laptop's power cable is unplugged, prompting a battery icon to appear next to the url field.

By clicking on the icon, users can activate the power saving mode. The browser will also detect when the battery is running low and suggest enabling the mode.

Krystian Kolondra, senior vice president for engineering at Opera Software, said: 'It's extremely frustrating to run out of battery on your computer, whether you are out traveling, watching videos, or you have just left your charger behind.

'Our new power saving mode will nudge you when the laptop starts to consume battery, and, when enabled, it can increase the battery life by as much as 50%.'

The browser saves power by simplifying code and keeping animated themes to a minimum.

It also reduces the activity on tabs in the background and cuts the the frame-rate to 30 frames per second.

An ad blocker also helps to contribute to longer battery life by reducing memory use. Opera claims to reduce memory consumption by up to 47 per cent with its ad blocker.

Tests performed by Opera Software showed the browser was able to run for three hours longer than Chrome on a laptop running Windows 10 64-bit version.

The tests were run on a Lenovo X250 16GB RAM laptop by visiting 11 popular websites, opening each in a separate tab.

Each page was scrolled five times, left alone for a minute and then repeated until the laptop ran out of battery.

Opera found using its power save mode enabled the laptop to run for two hours 56 minutes – 49 per cent longer than with Chrome.
