文章题目：From Facebook to cell calls: Layers of electronic intimacy incollege students’ interpersonal relationships
Communication technologies are widely usedto manage interpersonal relationships,
but little is known about which media aremost useful at different stages of relationship
development, and how the pattern of usagemay be influenced by contextual factors or
users’ gender. Drawing on theories ofrelationship development, this study examined
usage patterns among 34 college studentsparticipating in six geographically stratified
focus group interviews. Analyses revealeda sequence of media use tied to stages
of relationship development − fromFacebook in early stages to instant messaging
and then cell phones as a relationshipprogressed. Judgments about the efficacy and
appropriateness of using a medium werebased on how well its salient features matched
prominent goals or addressed majorconcerns of a relationship at the given stage.
International students added twotechnologies to the sequence to accommodate time
differentials and distance fromcommunication partners. Males were less explicit about
the sequence, except when referring tocross-sex relationships.

Our study suggested that there was asequence of media use among college students,
although the sequence was moderated bygeographic distance between communication partners and users’ gender. Judgingthe efficacy and appropriateness of using a
medium was based on how well its salientfeatures matched prominent goals or
addressed major concerns of a relationshipat the given stage. Reaffirming the proposal that media choice is seldom, ifever, a function of a single factor (Fulk et al.,
1990; Sitkin et al., 1992), the findingsrevealed that media choice was contingent
upon interactions between media featuresand factors at the individual (gender),
relational (closeness of a relationship),and contextual (geographic distance) levels.
Future research and theory on media choicemust continue to address the interactions among these factors.
