From Perception to Behavior: Disclosure Reciprocity and the Intensification of Intimacy in Computer-Mediated Communication

文章内容:

Abstract

This study proposes and tests a novel theoretical mechanism toexplain increased selfdisclosure

intimacy in text-based computer-mediated communication (CMC) versus

face-to-face (FtF) interactions. On the basis of joint effects ofperception intensification

processes in CMC and the disclosure reciprocity norm, the authorspredict a perceptionbehavior

intensification effect, according to which people perceive partners’initial

disclosures as more intimate in CMC than FtF and, consequently, reciprocate with more

intimate disclosures of their own. An experiment compares disclosurereciprocity in textbased

CMC and FtF conversations, in which participants interacted with a confederatewho

made either intimate or nonintimate disclosures across the twocommunication media. The

utterances generated by the participants are coded for disclosurefrequency and intimacy.

Consistent with the proposed perception-behavior intensificationeffect, CMC participants

perceive the confederate’s disclosures as more intimate, and, importantly, reciprocate with

more intimate disclosures than FtF participantsdo.

Discussion

The present studycontributes to our understanding of self-disclosure online in several important

ways. First, by pairingthe reciprocation norm framework (Dindia, 2002) with the

perceptionintensification effect in CMC (Walther, 1996), this study proposed and found

support for theperception-behavior intensification effect. According to this effect, CMC

interactions intensifydisclosure intimacy perceptions, which in turn stimulate perceivers

own more intimatedisclosures in CMC than in FtF.

Second, this study showsthat communication media have different effects on disclosure

frequency and intimacy, suggesting distinct underlying theoretical mechanisms for

these two disclosuredimensions. The medium had an overall effect on disclosure frequency,

with more disclosures inCMC than FtF, but contrary to what previous research

has suggested, there wasno overall effect of medium on disclosure intimacy. On average

disclosures in CMC wereno more intimate than disclosures in FtF. The theoretical mechanisms

and their implicationsare discussed in the following section.
