Is this the future of in-flight entertainment? The air travel HELMET which cancels out all other noise (and bizarrely, even controls what you can smell)

  • Patent filed for new headset designed for full immersion into entertainment
  • Sensory deprivation environment cancels out noise from other fliers
  • Includes built-in video screen, glasses, earphones and even a mini-airbag
  • An ‘odorous substance’ can also be diffused inside the helmet

If you’re a fan travelling in peace when you fly, you’ll love this.

Airbus, the world’s leading commercial aircraft manufacturer, has made a patent application for a virtual reality isolation helmet.

Designed by Frenchman Bernard Guering, the helmet looks like the stuff of Star Wars and would allow the wearer to fully immerse themselves in in-flight entertainment as it cancels out all other peripheral noise.

If made, it could distract fearful flyers from the giant metal tube they are flying in thousands of miles above ground and, for the rest of us, it might provide welcome relief from wailing children or over refreshed passengers in the rows behind.

"It is known that aircraft flights generate stress for certain passengers," Airbus says in the patent application.

"An aim of the invention is to improve in this respect the comfort of aircraft passengers."

Designs show the helmet would be mounted onto the back of your seat with a visor to pull down over your face and a high-tech headset that cancels out distracting peripheral noise.

According to Airbus each headset would come with a built-in video screen, glasses for better viewing and earphones designed to be used while watching films, listening to music or playing video games.

A mini-airbag would be on standby, ready for deployment during extreme turbulence to protect your head.

The headset would include a built-in video screen, glasses and headphones and be used for watching films

Best -  and strangest -  of all is that the patent allows for the diffusion of an ‘odorous substance’ inside the helmet, so you can choose the perfect scent to accompany your in-flight film.

But we shouldn’t get too excited just yet.

"It is just a patent," Airbus Communications Manager Mary Anne Greczyn told Yahoo. According to her, the company files thousands of patents for almost anything the design team can dream up, regardless of whether it might be turned into a reality or not.

Another of Airbus"s hair-brained patents: an in-flight seating system similar to bicycle seats

More recently that has included windowless cockpits and miserable looking benches with bicycle-like seats attached that would replace traditional squishy seats.

"In order to satisfy the needs of our airline customers and their passengers, our industry looks into a future a year and a hundred years ahead.’
